I am seeking your vote for re-election to the Dearborn City Council.
My wife Jamie and I have been married for nearly 45 years. I have resided in Dearborn for 60 years and attended Dearborn Public Schools. I attended HFC and UM-D, and I am a graduate of EMU's School of Police Staff and Command. I was a prior member of the Michigan Association of Chief's of Police.
I served 27 years with the Dearborn Police Department and another 12 years with the University of Michigan-Dearborn Department of Public Safety, including command positions. Two of my children and one of their spouses currently serve in law enforcement, and another spouse works as a health care professional.
I believe that I offer a unique perspective with experience in law enforcement and as a senior. I am a "Voice of Reason" that residents can depend on to do the right things for the right reasons.
My Priorities
PUBLIC SAFETY
Ensure people feel safe in their homes, neighborhoods, businesses and surroundings through crime suppression and traffic safety enforcement measures. We need to ensure adequate staffing for police, fire and dispatchers, and provide excellent training, equipment, pay and benefits to attract and retain qualified candidates to serve in these positions.
NEIGHBORHOODS
Neighborhoods are critically important. Ordinance education and enforcement are key to making neighborhoods attractive, and to both attract and retain residents. Historic preservation, regulating short-term and long term rentals are important to me, as are supporting improvements, parks and infrastructure. Great neighborhoods and services attract businesses, employers, development and educational opportunities.
PRIORITIZING CITY SERVICES
I believe we need to slow down and revaluate what we are doing as far as providing some basic city services. It has been great getting all sorts of grants and funding for a number of projects and improvements, but basic city services are lagging behind what we have experienced in the past. Litter is everywhere. We need improvements in our trash/leaf collection, vector control, and more stringent enforcement of ordinances in our neighborhoods and business districts. Education is needed, and has been provided, but problems persist. Time for more aggressive measures.
SENIOR SERVICES
Being both a prior police officer and senior citizen give me a unique perspective and lived experience as a City Council member. I have long been an advocate of providing needed help and services for our seniors. This includes the need for an improved process for help for leaf and snow removal for those that cannot perform or afford to have the work done. Many seniors do not have access to internet for social medial information, and need to rely on other forms of communication. We as a City need to ensure we adequately provide this information and services to our seniors.
Besides serving on the Dearborn City Council, I also had a long law enforcement career and served on the Dearborn Traffic Commission.
I 've watched or attended many council meetings over the decades before election to the current City Council. I was an active participant as well as attending a number of City related meetings and various Boards and Commission meetings. I have attended a number of Neighborhood Association meetings, and I am a member of the Dearborn Federation of Neighborhood Associations.
